Why Base Preparation Decides How Long a Patio Lasts
Most failed interlocking stone patios in Southwestern Ontario did not fail because of the stone. They failed because of what is underneath it.

When a patio sinks, tilts or opens up gaps between the stones, homeowners usually assume they bought the wrong pavers. Almost always the stone is fine. The base under it was too thin, the wrong material, or never compacted properly.
What a proper base actually involves
- Excavating deep enough for the finished stone height plus the full base depth
- Removing soft topsoil and organic material, which compresses over time
- Installing granular base material in lifts and compacting each lift separately
- Setting slope away from the house so water leaves the surface
- Screeding a consistent bedding layer before any stone is placed
Compacting in lifts matters. A single deep dump of gravel compacted from the top leaves loose material below, and that is where a patio settles first.
Freeze-thaw is the real test
Ontario winters move ground. Water that sits in or under a patio expands when it freezes and lifts whatever is above it. A base built for drainage handles that cycle. A base built on trapped soil does not, and you see the result in the second or third spring.
If you can only spend money on one part of a patio, spend it below the surface.
Questions worth asking any contractor
- How deep is the excavation and what base depth are you installing?
- Are you compacting in lifts, and with what equipment?
- Where is water going to go once the surface is in?
- What edge restraint are you using to hold the perimeter stones?
